Get your game in gear for 2019

Oosthuizen comes out on top

What an emotional win for Louis Oosthuizen at the SA Open last week, any comments about these guys not caring were clearly wrong. The simple truth is that to get to the level of Oosthuizen, Schwartzel, Grace and Stone talent is not enough. The deep passion and commitment these guys have is evident when you see what a win means. This week at Leopard Creek should be another classic, cant wait!

Have you started practicing yet?

We are looking forward to seeing you over the holidays, putting in a little practice and enjoying your game much more.

Well done Sid!

Having just retired, Sid had at long last some time to work on his golf. The results have been excellent to date. As you will see in the screenshots, Sid has managed to simplify his backswing and for the first time in many years is now releasing the club correctly.

The direction of technology

Are you making the most of what we have?

The PGA Tour has seen spectacular increases in distance off the tee. Our sense is that the percentage increases have by now way been replicated for the average golfer. The good news is that means that there is a ton of potential available to you.

technology of golf

Using perfectly fitted, larger-headed, longer-shafted drivers, the best players have a 15 – 20% yardage gain. Have you seen that improvement in the last few years? It won’t take us long to calculate just how big an improvement you could make.

Smallest change; biggest improvement

Sometimes a golfer has the right tool, but is using them in the wrong way. Sometimes just a change in ball position; an improvement in setup; or the sequence of the downswing; produce that 10 – 15% improvement.

What motivates you?

Is there a particular format you enjoy most?

We’re trying to gain a better understanding of what’s important to our golfers. In the last two weeks, we’ve really appreciated the responses to the simple questions asked. If you didn’t answer and want to help out, we’ve got the first two weeks below.

golf motivation golf achievements

This week we examine formats. We sense that this is an area of the game where golfers of different ages, and those with different handicaps, might have different views.

Let us know

This is one question. Let us know your most and least favorite format.

golf approaching shots

My thought for this week is, “Don’t come up short on approach shots.” A study revealed that the most common miss by amateur golfers is short. When we look at club choice, amateurs select a club for approach shots that, if they hit it perfectly, will get to the middle of the green. Try a round where you choose a club that should get to the very back of the green, and then see if you hit more greens.

The Sunshine Tour is in town!

Sun Sibaya Challenge

The Sunshine Tour is in town for the Sun Sibaya Challenge which starts today on the Woods Course at Mount Edgecombe Country Club. Lets hope our club players, Michael Hollick, Kevin Stone, Siyanda Mwandla and young Luke Mayo all have a great week!

The South African Open

The Sunshine Tour have announced that The City of Johannesburg is the new host of the South African Open which will be played at Randpark Golf Club from the 6th to 9th December. The Sunshine Tour and Golf RSA have merged the Joburg Open with the South African Open and for the first time ever, it will be a tri-sanctioned championship between the Sunshine Tour, European Tour and Asian Tour.

With 240 professionals expected to tee it up over the two courses at Randpark they have also announced that Louis Oosthuizen, Branden Grace, Charl Schwartzel and Brandon Stone will be in the field that will be playing for around R17.5 million in prize money.

Playing with the big dogs!

The latest “bunnies” group have now completed the tuition stage of their program and now head out to the course. It’s been a real a pleasure helping these ladies on their first golfing steps and hopefully they will find a way to include golf in their busy lives.

“I have loved doing the bunnies program, thank you so much I have loved doing the bunnies program, thank you so much”.
– Nicky

“Thanks for your dedication and patience”.
– Heidi

“Thanks for a wonderful program! You have been a great teacher and I am very excited to get on the course.”

– Kristen

The next bunnies program will be starting in March next year for anyone keen to join in. Let me know.

Watch this quick video to see how confusion can be solved in a very short space of time with the correct advice.

Thanks Annie

“I was one over today: One over a house, one over a patio and one over a swimming pool”
– George Brett (baseball hall of famer)

“Actually, the only time I ever took out a one-iron was to kill a spider, and it took 7 to do that!”

– Jim Murray (sports writer)

If I told you that the impact on accuracy is far greater on a shorter iron than a longer iron,
would that make you take more notice of your lie angles?

Put a #4 iron on the ground. Raise the toe. Now imagine a straight line squarely leaving the sweet spot.
Notice how its going left of target. Now do the same with a #9 Iron and check the line leaving the sweet spot.
Whoa. Much further left.

You’ve made a great swing but, if the lie angle on your #9 iron is 2° too upright,
then you’re going 15 feet left of your target. What is often 15 feet left of target when
you’re aiming at the green? Too right? Sand, rough, or even water. A great swing spoiled.

Let us help you hit more great shots. Let us check out your lie angles.
Get that right, and you’ll be amazed at how much more accurate you are.
This applies to all golfers. Why waste a great swing?

What if improving your golf improved your social experience playing the game?
Think about it for a moment. How does that sound to you?

First, improvement doesn’t have to be a one-on-one experience. It can be a shared experience.
Group or family coaching. A practice club. An excuse for 45 – 60 minutes hitting golf balls with friends and
family and then a drink and possibly food together afterwards.

With a better game, there’s more fun and enjoyment. There’s an opportunity to help
and encourage others. There’s the motivation to play and share the experience more often.
And there’s no experience like playing golf with friends.

A better playing experience out on the golf course is great.
It adds to everything: fulfillment, friendships, fun, fitness.

Happy golfing!
Steve
